The Cincinnati Red Stockings Baseball Team

The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first all-professional baseball team. Some teams had paid players. The first few decades of baseball were characterized by rivalries between teams and players who often moved between teams.

The dead-ball era was when players would rarely hit home runs. The 1919 World Series was fixed by a conspiracy that was known as the Black Sox Scandal. Spring training is a series of practices and games before the start of the regular season.

The warm weather in Arizona and Florida allow teams to practice and play without being concerned about the cold weather. New players can try out for roster and position spots during spring training, while existing players can practice before play begins. The teams that hold spring training in Arizona are grouped into the Cactus League, while teams that hold camp in Florida are known as the Grapefruit League.

Spring training attracts crowds who travel to the warmer climates to enjoy the weather and watch their favorite teams play, and spring break coincides with spring training, so college students go away for spring break. Postponed games or continuations of suspended games can result in an ad hoc one-game or five-game series. A team's series is organized into road trips and home stands.

Teams play games five to seven days a week, with Monday or Thursday being off days. There are a lot of games at night. The Sunday games allow teams to travel to their next destination prior to a Monday night game.

The First Season of the ACC Draft

The six teams that will be included in the first season of the draft league are the Frederick Keys, Mahoning Valley Scrappers, State College Spikes, Trenton Thunder, West Virginia Black Bears, and the Crosscutters.

The Sherman Antitrust Exemption

The exemption from the Sherman Antitrust Act was granted by an appeals court in 1922 and then unanimously affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1996. The baseball exemption is the most well-known antitrust exemption. Major League Baseball has long enjoyed total immunity from antitrust law.

The Federal Baseball Club of Baltimore, Inc. made a landmark 1922 decision. Antitrust laws are created by governments to protect consumers from predatory business practices. Market allocation, bid rigging, price fixing, and monopolies are some of the questionable business activities that are subject to antitrust laws.

The Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice brings criminal and civil antitrust actions. The Federal Trade Commission has civil enforcement actions. Private parties bring lawsuits asserting damage claims.

The Giants and Athletics in the World Series

The league champion team with the better regular-season win-loss record was awarded home-field advantage in the World Series. The second tie-breaker is the best divisional record if both league champions have the same record. The Giants have played in the World Series in both New York and San Francisco, and the Yankees and Athletics have only played in one city.

The Seattle Mariners are the only team that has never won a World Series

Major League Soccer has a partnership with P&G. The company will sponsor the MLS All-Star Game. The MLS deal is worth up to $100 million and will promote MLS content on P&G products. The Seattle Mariners are the only current MLB team that has never won a World Series, and the other teams have never won it.

More Baseball

More baseball. The plan pays fully vested members a minimum of $68,000 a year for those who start drawing at 45 and then a sliding scale that goes up to $220,000 for beneficiaries who wait until 62. The payouts are more meaningful for coaches, managers and trainers who have lower salaries.

The MLB Players' Choice in Rotating Years

Each division of the MLB has a pre-determined division from the other league's division that they will play in rotating years. Each year, the interleague baseball games are played with 16 of them against teams from the same division in the other league. The NL East is a real example.

The ALCS and NLCS Series Finals

The one-game playoff will be held the day after the season if there is a tie for the division title. There is no one-game playoff if there is a tie for the division and the losing team is assured of a wild card. The team that won the season series is the division champion.

The team with the better record in the division wins the title if the teams split their seasonal series equally. The winner is determined if they're still tied after 81 games. If they're still tied, that scenario is extended back to over 80 games.

The Division Series is a five-game series. The team with the best record gets the top seed and home field advantage in the playoffs. It hosts the first three games of the Division Series and faces off against the wild-card team.

The two remaining divisional winners will face off in a best-of-five match. The team with the second-best season record gets home field advantage in the series. The two winning teams will play in the League Championship Series.

The NL West and the American League Wild Card

The NL West and the American League Wild Card race will not need a tie-breaker in the playoffs in 2021.

The audience of the MLB playoffs through 2020

The average audience for the MLB playoffs through the division series in the year of 2020 was at its highest mark since the year of 2018, according to MLB Communications. The 2020 MLB playoffs had a 89% increase in viewers and there was a 3% increase in 2019. The league-wide household average has fallen when compared to the previous two seasons.

There were drops in TV viewers across households in 12 markets. The variety of options fans have to choose from is a factor that affects viewership. Star power is one thing that builds a long-term audience.

There is hope for baseball moving forward. The popularity of MLB waned in recent years, and as a result, the sports network focused on the NBA and the NFL. The network signed a deal with MLB.

The new extension between MLB and Disney's ESPN will see the network exclusively broadcasting 30 regular-season games per year through the year of 2028. The seven-year deal begins in 2022, and gives the rights to broadcast any expansion to the MLB Wild Card round to the Disney company. The next collective bargaining agreement is expected to expand the playoffs.

There are small positives for baseball, mostly tied to the growth of streaming. Fans can watch out-of-market games on MLB.TV. In its third season, MLB is partnering with YouTube.
