The Packers, Red Skins and Waterloof Hawk

The Packers, Red Skins, and Waterloo Hawks are the only teams that have ceased to exist in a league other than the NBA. Who is the biggest rival of the Atlanta Hawks? The Boston is a city.

The Washington team

The Washington team has refused to change its name for at least five decades. Fans at matches have been seen with red paint on their faces and costumes, which are considered a sign of respect and honour, in an appropriation of Native American culture. Fans wearing them in jest is disrespectful to the Native Americans.

The Pascack Hills Cowboys and the Valley Indian Football Team

The Pascack Hills Cowboys and the Pascack Valley Indians were put to rest after a decision at the end of the 2020-21 school year. The students of Hills are left in limbo as the school searches for a new name while a student-led committee works on finding new alternatives to the old mascots. The Washington Football Team won the East Conference of the NFL. Their victory proves that there is more to identity than name.

The Brigade

Those previous two failed because of the name Brigade. The term archer is associated with combat in general, rather than military combat, and the term Armada is tied to sea combat rather than land fighting. The brigade takes those mistakes and turns them into positives.

The Redskins

The stereotype of the Native Americans is shown when a kid dressed up in a mascot suit. It is easy to understand how people can be offended by such things. It would be ignorant to look past the instances of racism that are present in sports teams.

No one would think to name a sports team after a racist slur, but why would they do it to a group of people who are not racist? It is a derogatory term for Native Americans and it could be very damaging. It doesn't seem like a problem if it's being used for your race, but if you watch a game and thousands of people are yelling it, you should think about it.

People need to understand the history of terms like "Redskin" to understand how offensive they are. It is difficult to imagine a team with "Blackskins" or "Whiteskins", but it is possible. Native American organizations and nations often condemn the use of racist terms like "Redskins" and "Whites" in sports, but with little attention.

The use of names that refer to human groups as mascots equates them with animals. It may not be a big deal to refer to a team as the "Redskins", but it may reinforce power structures of the past. The use of a racial slur like "Redskin" is a reminder of racial inequality.

If you're not Native, you don't have a say. Redskin can be just as offensive as Ni**er. If you were white, you wouldn't understand the plight of minorities.
