Extension of the Switch Port into a Whole Network in VLAN Trunking

The switch port carries traffic more than once in one of the VLANs. One switch port will manage the traffic that is coming from a group of VLANs. It will be useful for the user to have two or more VLANs configured in a single network if they exchange traffic between two or more switches.

The Inter-Switch Link tags, also known as ISL, are used when identifying traffic. The trunk port will be used to carry the signal traffic from all the VLANs to the specific switch. The trunk port is used to mark the tag to the frame as iwq or Inter-Switch Link tags.

Every frame can be reached to designate a VLAN. It is possible to extend into the entire network in the VLAN trunking. It is important to make sure the singles are reaching the destination address when multiple numbers of VLANs are connected.

The OSI Model of Networks

The typical network is made up of network nodes. The traditional network was a series of pieces of hardware connected together, with each one being its own network node. The OSI model designates seven different layers for network transmissions and the trunking of the involved VLANs takes place in layer 2.

The Access Port

Data Transmission between Two VLANs

The data of two VLANs is carried on two interfaces on each switch. Access Port is the switchport's name.

The VLAN 0 concept

The primary function of a VLAN is to separate traffic. Extra services are needed for hosts in one VLAN to communicate with hosts in another. A service is a routers that can send packets between the different networks.

A host assigned to a VLAN can communicate with another host on the same network. Host on a VLAN don't have to be on the same switch if they pass traffic between them. The host does not have a VLAN tag on the frames.

The switch will add the VLAN tag when the frame reaches the port. The switch port has a VLAN ID that it will put into the tag. The native VLAN is tagged on the frame when an untagged frame enters a switch port.

If switch-A sent a frame to switch-B, it would be untagged and switch-B would tag it as VLAN 20. If the frame were to be sent by switch-B, it would be labeled as VLAN 15. Special use of VLAN 0 is reserved.

When CoS is used, a client can tag a fram with a different VLAN than the native one, which causes the switch to use the native one for that traffic. The VTP concept is not a DTP concept. The actual trunk is negotiated by DTP.
